Support Staff

  • COMMUNITY OUTREACH COORDINATOR

Alynn joined the team at the start of Main Season 2025 and has since developed a range of community activities for kids and adults. Her perpetually stained nails speak to her experience as a professional artist and longtime gardening enthusiast.

For Alynn, going to the market means engaging in conversations with friends (and friends-to-be) where a quick egg run often turns into a three-hour visit and an extra trip to the ATM. She is eager to continue strengthening Fulton Street Market’s relationship with the surrounding community.

  • FOOD ACCESS COORDINATOR

Lyndsey gained an interest in local food systems after working for a produce vendor at the Fulton Street Market. She became an intern at the Market during her Master of Public Health program and assisted with the Food Recovery Program. Her passion for working with the Grand Rapids community and dedication to sustainability and increasing equitable access to fresh, local foods led to her role as the Food Access Coordinator. She works alongside Dan and a great team of volunteers to help manage the Food Recovery Program.

Community Partners

  • FOOD ACCESS MANAGER

Initially starting at the Market as an intern from GVSU and Social Innovation graduate researcher, Dan joined the FSM team in an official capacity as the Food Access Coordinator in the spring of 2019. Heading up the Food Recovery Program, Dan ensures community members have equitable access to healthy and nutritious foods while at the same time removing the environmental impact that comes with food waste. On Saturdays, towards the end of the Market day, you can find Dan organizing the collection of donations from our vendors to be distributed within the community and to partner organizations. From there, he, along with a cast of volunteers, sets up a curbside market in the Heartside neighborhood where any and everyone is welcome to grab what they need, free of cost.

  • MARKET MASTER GARDENER

Val has been a visitor to the Market for over 30 years. She became more involved when the Extension Office of Michigan State University staffed a Smart Gardening Booth with Master Gardeners in 2018. Her interest extended to planting a pollinator garden on the west side of the Market headhouse in 2019. With the pollinator garden established, Val began weeding and planting the landscape beds in the parking lot. By utilizing low maintenance, drought tolerant, and native plants in these gardens, she is setting them up to be easy to maintain and flourish in the future.

  • FARMERS MARKET FOOD NAVIGATOR

Tessa is the Nutrition in Action Assistant Director at the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids and the Food Navigator at Fulton Street Market. As Food Navigator, Tessa provides nutrition resources to shoppers while educating them on purchasing, storing, and preparing their Market goodies. Through the Farmers Market Food Navigator Program, Tessa can address barriers that shoppers using food assistance might face, like building confidence in talking with vendors, using new foods, and selecting produce.

Board Members

  • PRESIDENT

Calvin Wiersma has proudly called Grand Rapids home since 2009 and has enjoyed building a career as a financial advisor at Grand Wealth Management. Growing up in Wisconsin around agriculture and running a small sweet corn stand, he understands the value of fresh, local food and the hard work it takes to bring it to market. Calvin joined the board because he wanted to help make sure the market remains a cornerstone of our community and is a place that sustains us all for years to come.

  • TREASURER

Fulton Street Market has always been a special place to Jes, as it's one of the few remaining spaces in Grand Rapids where she’s been able to show up just as I am and find community connection. Jes currently works as the Chief Financial Officer at Grandville Avenue Arts and Humanities. She is grateful to be able to use her knowledge in nonprofit leadership and finances to help steward Fulton Street Market into the future.

  • SECRETARY

Melanie serves on the board at Fulton Street Market with a deep sense of purpose and pride. For her, farmers are more than just food providers—they’re stewards of the land and essential threads in the fabric of a healthy community. In a world where food often feels distant or impersonal, she is passionate about bringing people closer to the source—knowing who grew your tomatoes, who baked your bread, and who gathered your honey. There’s something powerful about shaking the hand that fed you, and she believes that kind of connection changes how we eat, think, and live.

Supporting local isn’t a trend—it’s a way to uplift neighbors, strengthen small businesses, and build a more resilient community from the ground up. Farmers markets are more than just food hubs; they’re places where conversations spark, relationships grow, and shared values take root. Whether it’s helping a first-time grower find their footing or welcoming new families to the market every weekend, Melanie is committed to creating a space that nourishes both body and community, one market day at a time.
